I read your mail again.

Your receiver is set to copy that @@@RARE@@@ weak CW DX in the 
MGC mode. A typical @@SPOOK@@ way to set up the receivers.

If you do back the IF gain down some to get a zero AGC on antenna noise you 
will
loose that 12DB you measured and that you use to detect those weak signals.

Your receiver is acting very normal and your knowledge base from experience 
is increasing.
