I have been spoiled by looking at Westinghouse panel meters in electric generating plants and substations that look like pieces of art.

I think that is a sickness and it is contagious! For years I collected strange meters, mostly large ones, that could have no useful purpose what-so-ever in Amateur Radio. And, most likely, no place else.

Happy New Year to you both.

Harold

Going into a substation at O'Dark Thirty in the morning to resolve a problem, the metering all needs to be clear and legible.

Most modern substations are doing away with the old panel meters, knife switches and the asbestos laden panels in favor of all electronic relay gear, fault recorders and using broad band communications for remote access to everything. When on site a touch screen 21" flat panel display does all the stuff the old panel meters did....

Kind of sad I guess, but does save visits to the site for changes and to read targets I suppose. Don't have to worry about someone bumping into one of the old mechanical relay boxes and putting a small town in the dark.

Ought to be a lot of old relics available for conversation pieces in dumpsters around these upgrade sites...
