Or the final bit of capacitance in a tuned circuit.  If the gimmick 
(the way I learned to spell it) is made a little long to start, it is 
an easy and fast process to tune the circuit with wire cutters.  But 
watch out if there is DC across it and the power is on!  For this 
reason, they often have a much larger mica or ceramic in 
series.  Unlike using a trimmer, the circuit will stay in tune for a 
long time without worry.  Cheaper, too.

They are also used wherever extremely low values are required (like 
neutralizing oscillators and low- to medium-power tuned amplifiers).
