Yes a side band, in the TR-7's case the upper sideband, is a common
practice with later transmitters which are primarily designed for SSB
operation. The trick is to find a mic' that works well with AM, and
to set the carrier level very carefully. A scope will help but the
best way is to just adjust things on the air until you get good sound
quality reports. It will never be as good and an old AM transmitter
like a Collins 32V series, WRL transmitters, Johnson rigs, etc, but it
can be made to sound acceptable.
