Not only will having a radio to listen to be of crucial importance (in
the however-unlikely event of such a global catastrophe actually occuring)
BUT: after that scenario, I would like to humbly offer that myself - and
many others who posess boatanchor *transmitters* and who have backup
generators - may in fact become THE 'talkers' that those EMP-proof radios
will be able to hear.

I can make an honest kilowatt on AM from the BC band up thru about 20
meters - and 150 watts, and two rigs that make about 40 on all the current
ham bands (RCA BTA-1MX, Valiant, Ranger and ELMAC AF-67) I have a genset
available that will run 'em all, plus the house. (of course I have BA
recievers, too - R-390, R-390A, R-388...)

Someone I know, with a couple of retro-fit type mods, can do 10KW AM on
most HF freqs - as well as 1 KW, 450watts, and 100 watts - simultaneously
if need be. He has a military-style multifuel genset that will operate
all these rigs - and run on any reasonably-volatile oil. And he also
(lucky dog!) has the acreage for big antennae. I have room for slopers and
Vs... but still an effective antenna array can be fielded at my QTH.

So - *if* the Doomsday Scenario comes to pass - the Boatanchors of today
might very well become *the* communications infrastructure, until it all
gets put back together again.

Just my 200 milidollar on the subject of Hams, Emergencies, and
privately-owned legacy gear.   ;}

   Cheers
