Blair,
The filter caps are good to check. If they're not getting warm and the set
isn't producing AC hum, then they should be fine.
There is a blocking capacitor in the IF deck that, if it goes, will destroy
whatever IF filter is currently chosen. It is pretty easy to replace as the
IF deck comes out pretty easily. You just have to get the BFO aligned when
you put it back in, but that's pretty easy too.
Perhaps others can suggest some other common failure points that might be
critical.
