6K Ohms  most likely will not have any adverse affect of the audio level.
I don't recall if the volume control is a log-taper or a Linear potentiometer.
Whichever type it is, then you must replace it with the same type.
To determine which type pot this is, you simply adjust the pot to1/2 way, then measure the resistance with an Ohmmeter.  It should be around half the total for a Linear Resistor.  A Log Taper will read a very low value resistance value at mid scale.  on a 5 K Pot-perhaps 500 Ohms at mid point.
