I don't have experience with 6L6 types but I can tell a story about EL34's,
or E34L's actually:
A friend of mine has a Dynaco Stereo 70 and we retubed it with Tesla
E34L's. He had the bottom cover loose and that shorted the bias to one set
of tubes. While listening to the thing, he noticed the plates glowing
rather strongly red. We don't know how long they's run that
way. Immediate shutdown was followed by re-testing of tubes and bias and
so on. The tubes tested exactly as they had upon installation and have been
running just fine ever since.
My suggestion: if you can get any Tesla 6L6GC type tube for affordable
prices, do it. Beat the devil out of them and report your experience.
