[R-390] 390A's in New Service

Group,

I'm responsible for the control system on a major offshore oil platform. The
platform (SPAR built by Aker in Finland) cost .75 billion dollars so we have a
pretty good choice of equipment.

The various instruments and monitors in the system need to be calibrated every
few months. I thought what better way than to employ a couple of 390A's and
scopes with WWV as a freq standard.

I got with Les and Chuck and set up a "sole source" deal for two overhauled
units. Chuck provided us with two nice EAC's virtually dead stock. We didn't
pay Fowler money for them, but suffice it to say the price was a bit higher
than the hobby price (sorry if we cut in line, you know how things work $$$$$
talks). He also provide NOS sets of spares in the original boxes, new covers
and new A&M meters. We also got Y2K manuals on CDs.

These things work great and the boys on the platform really dig them. They are
kept in racks in a MCC building that the boys keep around 60F (brrrr). I'm
guessing during football season they will be locked on WWL for Saints football.

I could have done this with Icom R-75s but that would have been no fun at all.
Don't wait for Uncle Sam to keep these things in legit service. Make something
happen if you can.

Thanks Les for finding the cores and Chuck for supplying the finished rigs.

73 Tom
