[R-390] non R390 question

I realize this is a forum for R390's and R390A's which is why I subscribe 
and I plan on getting one soon. But in the mean time I have a question I 
hope someone can help me with and off line is fine.

I have  a nice Hammarlund HQ-180C and the slug in the bottom of the T5 
455khz IF transformer will not peak, it goes all the way in as far as it can 
go and does increase the signal but doesn't peak. The radio otherwise is 
fine but it does show some signs of being of of alignment.
Thanks, anyone have any ideas? caps? resistors, etc? I do have the manual,
