Not really both are good RF signal generators.

The  band switch drum is different. You cannot mix and match D and E 
mechanical  parts.

Tubes are tubes and caps are caps you can repair either if they  ever need it.

Accept what you can get. Do not pay a lot more for a "new"  E than an older 
"D".

Expect to recap it. My D model had several large micas cracked and leaking  
oil all over the inside. All that heat and nowhere to go. I made a ss  
replacement for the rectifier and it runs a lot cooler.....
