The original idea was to use MORSE telegraphers, which is why the 
producer first contacted the Morse Telegraph Club, but they weren't able 
to muster a partner for Ken  in time, so they switched to CW instead.    
While the demonstration was terrific, it would have been even more 
impressive had they whipped the young-uns copying Morse from a 150 year 
old sounder (with Prince Albert can resonator)!
