For a voltage reference more in keeping with the theme use a few neon bulbs
in series to replace the zeners. The parallel capacitance would have to be
kept low to prevent relaxation oscillations. NE-2's would be run at about
half a milliamp. Pretty to look at.

I really like the Idea of some NE-2 as a reference source.
The series pass transistor would be isolated from ground and the heat sinks.
So the stressing voltage is just what ever the difference is between input
and out put
voltage. I thought the 2N3055 would handle 60 or so volts. Do the 6082s drop
more than that across them? My manual is not at hand and I do not know the
real voltages.
You are really right there are much better devices than the 2N3055.
