Depends on where you're starting from. On my yellow-striper, where are all the
gears were encased in dirt and sand, it's necessary. It'll be many hours of work the
first time. Lots of little retaining rings and springs you have to be careful you don't
lose. If you've never taken out your RF deck you probably need to buy a long
phillips screwdriver, the bristol spline wrenches, and retaining-ring pliers.
And if you tear everything apart you're probably also going to do RF
bandswitch and crystal oscillator switch realignments which are another little bit
of work and worry.
If you have some existing dried grease on the mechanism, you can probably do
a spot cleaning more easily than tearing the whole thing down. If you have a lot
of existing dried grease, you may want to tear down the whole thing just to get
it shiny and clean.
If you want to do it, but cannot justify doing it on your existing clean radio, just
get a yellow- or blue-striper :-)
