Yes, I have changes more than caps on several R-390's and R-390A's. I have  
even added some solid state devices and, used various devices in place of the  
3TF7. I have been accused of being a witch etc. I have had 39 R-390A's pass  
through my hands and 2 R-390's. I have seen bad caps, split caps, brown ones,  
black ones and yellow ones. Bad resistors, broken gear clamps, leaking filter  
electrolytic capacitors (mainly General Instruments), some were "depot 
dawgs",  some blue stripers and some looked as new. "Ya pays yer money and ya takes 
yer  chances" as someone once said. I've used grease. then synthetic oils, 
"Slick  50", Mobil gear lube and various other concotions, none of my finger have 
fallen  off yet and I still have all my hair and teeth. One thing I haven't 
done  yet is lick the radium dials faces of the meters, mainly because Roy 
Morgan  cautions against it. My god, I've even used diodes in place of 26Z5W's and 
the  B+ didn't smoke anything else........I guess I'm lucky huh?
 
My advice, don't take any of this crap too seriously and nobody here is the  
expert on everything related on the 390 series.
 
I used to love jumping into the fray and antagonizing others with my wit  and 
wisdom, but now I just chuckle and mutter "imagine  
that"............................ Mainly, because nothing "new" has been  discovered about these 
receivers in years, most of us have the "T  Shirt" and have been there and done that.
 
People come and go from this and other lists all the time, I have  
unsuscribed from this and other lists too many times to count, and have more  hours in 
the penalty box than some hockey players.
 
Be tolerant of others, but remember too, that everyone has an opinion and  we 
all know that old saw about opinions and rear ends.
