Neither of us was going to back down."

And so it goes. There are situations that can't be resolved
because the facts can't be tested. Where I worked, when I worked,
there were discussions that were terminated because we all
recognized, when it was pointed out, that we'd had this discussion
before and couldn't resolve it. Such discussions were called
"ratholes". Go down a rathole and you had no idea where you'd
come out.

Others we called religious wars. No proof was available here on Earth.
In the R390 group we have those who believe (some think they can prove)
that complete capacitor replacement is an end to all of your worries.
Never mind the resistors, coils and tubes, not to mention the mechanisms.
Others are equally sure that capacitors only fail under stress, where
a Blue Striper represents maximum stress.

Many years of ratholes and thousands of years of religious wars have
shown that these are pointless discussions. Nevertheless, the religious
can still get very hot about their issues. That's the way we are, the way
God designed us, if you can't handle evolution.

The next time this sort of thing breaks out, someone should holler
"Rathole" or "Religious war." Then no matter whether we've been drinking
or not taking drugs, we should back off.

Ah, but God designed us to fight, so that the best man may win. The
problem is that continuous fighting prevents any kind of progress. If we
fall back into continuous fighting, as some political parties have
encouraged, then we lose the ground we have gained in civilized behavior.
We either get along in a civil manner, or we fight until nothing is left
that is worth saving.

Is that what's troubling you, Binkey? Then lift your head up and never give
up, never give up, that ship!

Bill Hawkins
