I too was saddened to watch the discussion unfold as it did.
I agree with Bob - it is easy enough to look back at the emails from
Dallas and others and see a fair bit of behaviour on Dallas' part as he
wound up accusing other of.
I'm not sure what happened on the part of Dallas - he may be tired,
stressed out, overworked, under-appreciated, I don't know. I've certainly
responded the way Dallas did in my own life, and upon reflection, found it
usually to be related to lack of sleep (the screaming 3 month old 2 feet
from me as I type has that affect, for example).
I wish Dallas well - his contributions no doubt are many, but I won't miss
future discussions with the tone of this last go-around on capacitors. I
honestly found much of the perplexing behaviour to be originating from
Dallas' own messages.
I think the earlier discussion with Nolan and so forth evolved from a
focus of the topics on the list - is the list primarily about R-390
radios, or is it a group of like minded folks sharing a discussion which
frequently is about tube radios?
I personally strongly prefer that a list with the title R-390 in it remain
on topic to the R-390's themselves as much as reasonably possible. The
notion of 'use the delete key' really doesn't apply to folks reading a
mail list as a digest, since you have scroll through all the off-topic
messages.
A list for like minded people who are comfortable with meandering
discussions about is certainly appropriate, but mixing it with lists like
this one makes it difficult to stay on this list, simply from a time
perspective.
