Well I don't know who some of you folks are but the real truth is yes the
decks have brown beauty not all of them it depends what manufacture made the
R-390a receivers.
I mean all of them have to be replaced just because you didn't see the crack
doesn't mean you should not change it.
The caps have some cracks that some times you have to look under a magnifier
to see them.
So if you don't changed them that is your preference but you all are sadly
mistaken if you don't.
I have done well over 150 restorations from the ground up on every one of
them and the all have many many caps that are leaking most of you folks just
don't know what you are talking about.
Dallas is correct in saying change the brown caps and the black caps and for
that matter you should check even the yellow audiovox type caps in the 67
and 68 EAC I.F decks they are failing also they just plain short so don't
think your in the clear because you have a newer manufactured module that
everything is great and you don't have to worry because that is just plain
BS and stupid on your part if you don't watch what you are doing and know
what you are doing when it come to restoring or trouble shooting your R-390a
receiver or any other Boat anchor type receiver
I find some of you folks are just plain cheap and won't change anything and
when the receiver fails I see you folks up here on this reflector asking
all kinds of question.
Also as for the solid state mod done on the power supply that is a big
problem because the B+ hits hard and blows all kinds of thing outs.
Please put back the 2 rectifiers 25Z6 that were originally designed to be
used that will give the receiver a soft start and don't forgot to put a new
3TF7 Ballast tube in when it fails.
I am tried of hearing my resistor works great that is BS also there is no
regulation being done.
Do you all really think that the Collins engineers were stupid when they
designed this great receiver?
I think not.
If you rebuild the R-390 series receivers just put everything back the way
it was designed.
Here is the biggest lie I have ever heard and I wont' say who said it but
there are no more 3TF7 Ballast tubes so you must buy my solid state
modification for a 100.00 and you will never ever have to worry about
finding another 3TF7 ballast tube again.
That tube can be found almost any time you need them.for about 29.00 to
35.00.
Look at ebay look at some web sites they are always turning up some where
and guess what they don't blow out like everyone says.
If yours did burn out so what the damn tube was so old and has been run who
knows how long.
If you did blow one out and it was almost new you have something else wrong.
Good luck and keep those receivers running
.
If ever need a restoration on a R-390 series receiver email me I can do
the job a lot cheaper then most and a better than most.
I will have to give credit to Walter Wilson he is better than most like me I
have not seen in person Walters work but look at his web site that should
tell the story.
My name mention on Walters web site for the grease that I use on the gear
train on the R-390 series receivers.
