Ahah!  That reminds me of the procedure for determining whether you have a
hydrogen or helium filled ballast tube.  Unfortunately, it does not qualify
as non-destructive testing and might only be cost effective for a post
mortem.

Of course, there is a difference in lift favoring hydrogen, however,
manufacturing variations are apt to "outweigh" the differential so a
precision balance scale would not be of much help.
