Phosphoric acid is the stuff used to prep bare steel before applying a
primer coat.  It micro-etches the surface so the primer will grab.
Nowadays, they often use self-etching primer.

That's also the incredient in Coke, Pepsi, and other soft drinks that helps
eliminate nausea.  In the old days, the soda fountains (and drug stores,
etc.) offered "phosphates", quite popular with the ladies.

I generally find that DeOxit does a good job on crusty tube pins.
