Dallas Lankford had a series of articles (I think in Hollow State News, 
but maybe they were in the NRC's DX News) on replacing the 16 KC filter 
with something more useful. I think he tried some 6 KHz ceramic filters 
and the new 6 KHz Collins torsional filter. Maybe you could do 
something similar with a Rockwell/Collins 500 Hz or 300 Hz mechanical 
filter. (They don't seem to offer the 1.2 KHz torsional filter as a 
stock item anymore.)
