Excellent thoughts! Fusing the output of a Variac is
something that really ought to be a mandatory
'upgrade'.

Many power transformers (Tek ones come to mind too)
have multi-input primary taps, and using the highest
one is good as Les points out.

 The 'factory' Variac voltmeters are often junk.
