Hi

The trade off is basically that with tubes you are better off doing the 
analog processing. The digital stuff is just to hard to do. If you 
count up the transistors the same thing is true with sand, but of 
course these days nobody counts transistors.

If you go with a 50 or 60 KC IF to feed the DSP stuff you could do the 
conversion part with tubes ...
