[R-390] What is the difference between 390 and 390A

You are right...they are pretty cool to look at as well.

I like my SX-28A now that it's electrically restored...nice audio and tuning 
system. (gears)  Will look nice in it's cabinet with matching speaker up 
next to the R-390A in it's cabinet.....
