I agree with Tom...it's not hard to get around in.

The Calibration is a different story....requires some stuff most of us don't 
have...

Your sensitivity measurements are useless if the output metering is 
uncalibrated....

Gene, If you can fix and align a R-390A, you can service a HP 8640B.
Ebay has service manuals on CD for $12. They are modular in design with
mostly plug-in boards. Some boards even have idiot lights on them to
tell you something is wrong. All boards are color coded for their
sockets.
