Hi, I think they starting running out of red paint and had lots of yellow
left over from a parking lot project and stretched the paint by mixing in
some yellow resulting in an orange color. I may be wrong about this. It
may be another color they mixed with red. For fear of saying something
stupid, I'm going to let it go at that.
I'm a little intriqued with color of communications receivers - for a long
time they were black, black, black and the backlit dials provided the only
color, aside from white lettering and chrome or nickel plate here and
there. I suspect the mentality was "this equipment really does something,
it doesn't need color to sell". The National NC-200 around 1940 and Post
WWII receivers, like the hq 129 , starting showing colors in the sense of
contrasting tones and subdued colors, culminating in the colorful NC-270
and others of that period. What could a manufacturer of more "professional"
gear do, put a little red on an emblem, use a little different shade of a
sober color, switch from red to orange on an emblem. After all, this is
the ultimate type of radio and color should be perceived as a secondary
issue. However, color probably was not an unimportant issue. Witness how
many of us want our old radios to have authentic colors when restored or are
appalled by non-authentic paint jobs. The user expects a certain look to
some degree.
I don't think I've helped with the question directly to any degree but there
may be others who know the real story on red vs. orange, best regards, Dan
