I like Bob's band cruising ability analogy, 
the R-1051B is to the R-390 as the R-390 is to the SP-600.
Those individual tuning knobs on the 1051 are *hard* to turn.
The Navy wanted a receiver to put on a frequency and it 
stay there, even when the big guns on board were firing.
