[R-390] ID plate repair

I've got an identification plate from which I accidentally rubbed off some 
of the black portion while polishing.  Is there a way to repair a mistake 
like that?  Can the plate simply be touched up with paint?  If so what would 
be the best kind?  Does anyone have experience with this?  Any help would be 
greatly appreciated.
