Richard,
YES! You *are* a heretic.
Now stop causing trouble by invoking the gods of great ukumpucky and the
devils of gear train grease! (Shudder ... dare I refer to them obliquely,
let alone say their names in print!)
Leave well enough alone.. go back, BACK, I say.. !!
... back to the shack where you may spend many, many hours of penitence
spinning that knob with one finger. Tune Djarkarta. Tune London. Tune the
weekend ham cw contests. Tune local and DX am radio (but only briefly, lest
the programming rot your mind.) Tune numbers stations ... All the while
imagining yourself a long-retired shift worker doing "government work"
behind locked doors at Vint Hill Farms Station in the late 1950's.
Concentrate on the lone sailor radioman on a destroyer at midnight far at
sea north of the arctic circle in late Fall with the outside air well below
freezing, setting for the hundredth time a new comm frequency to pull in
the fleet commanders' encrypted signals from Norfolk or Puerto Rico.
Think back carefully lo, these many years now, that you overhauled that
radio and put a, (gasp!) *gun lubricant* in the gear train! Give the knob
a twist once more with a single finger of the other hand, now that the
first hand is worn out from spinning in frequency after frequency. Ponder
on all the time gone by since the overhaul you did, all the many, many
frequencies you've dialed in.. Imagine, if you need to imagine it, that the
thing moves even more smoothly than earlier as you ask it to once again
nudge up a whisper fraction of a kc to center the signal in the selected
bandwidth.
Yes, back to the shack with you.
Take THAT for penitence!
(And in another year's time let us know how well it's tuning!)
