Yes. Making slugs with threads on the outside and hex shaped 
holes in the center are a lot more difficult, but can be done.

The first time I did this was for an R-1004 with a smashed slug. 
In that receiver, the IF cans were tuned by a small, slotted, 
piece of threaded brass rod with a flat on the slug end. I just 
stuck the rod down into the epoxy/iron mix and let it harden. 
Then peeled off the straw. Worked beautifully.

And as Bob says, you must use a minimum amount of epoxy.
