John,

These "B" batteries can be hard to find and quite expensive. Fair Radio
Sales has some mil surplus "B" batteries that are a little bit aged, but I
assume at least partially serviceable.

A friend of mine has made up B battery packs by connecting applicable new
alkaline batteries in series. Size and number of interconnections may be
kept down by using 9 volt units. Series strings may be paralleled for
increased ampere-hour capacity (and increased cost). A fresh alkaline cell
has an open circuit voltage of 1.6v and still has considerable life left
after discharged to 1.1v. If you make the pack with a higher than required
initial voltage longer service will result.

Discharge data fairly representative of most alkaline batteries can be found
at duracell.com/oem/primary/alkaline
