Thanks for all the stories and advice. This thread contains some=20
useful info that should be helpful to others shipping their BA's in the=20
future.
Based on what I've read, it sounds like I'll be wasting my time tryin=
g=20
to squeak some money from UPS. I will however go a round or two with them=20
based on principle. This parcel was certainly dropped from a considerable=20
height. (Truck to floor, conveyer to floor etc...) I'm also going to file a=20
claim with The Box Place. The radio could have been packed better. The radio=
=20
was covered in bubble wrap, a layer of single wall cardboard taped around=20
that, then placed in a larger single walled box with peanuts stuffed around.=
=20
Many of the peanuts=20
were crushed to tiny crumbs by the weight, 108lbs. Yes, it was in a cabinet,=
=20
I had no idea. The seller didn't mention it. The seller is a yard sale guy=20
and really didn't know too much. He said it would be professionally packaged=
=20
and I, never having had a shipping problem before, left it at that. BIG=20
MISTAKE!
UPS wanted me to put the radio back in its' original packaging and=20
ship it to their customer service department for evaluation. FAT CHANCE! Th=
e=20
next time this radio will see daylight is after I'm dead. Then my poor famil=
y=20
will have to sell off my radio estate to some yard sale guy who doesn't know=
=20
anything about radios who will sell it to some guy who'll be so excited to=20
get it that he won't question the sellers shipping techniques and OH NO this=
=20
poor R-391 is destined to hit the deck once more. D=C3=A9j=C3=A0 vu all over=
again!=20
Upon closer inspection the radio doesn't seem to be a basket case at=20
all, more like a handyman special. The outer frame looks like it can be=20
straightened and the RF deck turns freely. Removing the front panel may=20
reveal more problems but I'm waiting for the UPS inspector to arrive first.=20
Clearing some dust off with a finger shows a very clean chassis. All in all=20
not bad considering I planed to tear it down anyway. Still I can't help bein=
g=20
a little annoyed.
Thanks everyone!
