I thought it was the pins that measure 100K on the Ohmmeter 8^)

In all seriousness, if the octal unit is the type where there is a removable
cap (cover) and the Xtal plugs into a internal Xtal socket you can do this.
Take the cap off, unplug the Xtal and use your ohmmeter to measure for
continuity between Xtal socket and octal tube pins.
