I've done it either way, and it really doesn't matter a whole lot. 
Some people like the excitement of last minute sniping, but there's
always the risk of not getting your bid placed in time.  If you're
serious about it and have a maximum dollar figure in mind, it is
probably best to go with the proxy system and let the chips fall where
they may.
