"They're children, drawn into childishness",
or somethnig very much along those lines.

Well, that depends on whether you see the group as a digest
aggregation of multiple messages or as individual messages. 

If you get the digest, then you're condemned to using an editor
to extract the message you want to reply to, changing the "To:"
and "Subject:" lines, and only then do you get to add your reply.

That's why I subscribed in individual-message mode.
