I've been doing the solder blob as Helmut describes for years.

I've so-so luck with the aspirin technique, best bet seems to use a cheap
aspirin with no coating.
What I've been doing of late to tin small gauge wire on coils and toroids
is to puddle a blob of solder on the end of an iron and then run the wire
though the blob which burns off the insulation and tins it nicely after a
quick wipe with a rag.
