[R-1051] Speaker hook up

Do you mean low audio or absolutely no audio?
Yes you should be able to hear something (not a lot, but something) via a
600 ohm speaker.
Can you hear anything via the headphone jack?
Are you hooked up to the correct USB or LSB connector?
I've never used anything other than the headphone jack on an R-1051.

Weird - looking at my R-1051 manual (94841(A) Change 3) , the two-pin audio
connectors J5 and J6 aren't connected to anything inside the cabinet! See
schematic 5-1A sheet 1.
The audio line outputs go to pins on J4, but that's all. Is this a
schematic error or what?
The schematic in 0967-LP-970-9010 is redrawn and does show the J5 and J6
connections.
