Thought that radio was a myth! Last I saw that program it was years delayed and had issues. That being said I do know most of the young engineering people I have had contact with in the past couple years only know SDR and GUI interfaces for radio and have never turned a knob, what happen to the world we use to know. Recall seeing reports of how in Bosnia/ Serbia we had lots of Harris assets on the ground but no one trained in there use so they were deemed useless and surpluses out.
Think the thing I look at is what becomes a dominate platform. The R-390 in its day dominated in its day where lots of other lesser radios tried to push it of the top of the heap like all that SRR 11/12 and 13 crap but the R-390A stayed king despite of the challenges until the R-1051 family of SSB radios established itself. Other radios tried to get into the game like all those Cubic 3030 and substandard Harris 550 receivers but the RF-590/R-2368 pushed the R-1051 family off the top of the heap and has been there a while now.
But after forty years of hard fought analog receivers this is what we are reduced to now?
Maybe that's why I want a 590 because it's the last of the line? Yes I know that all the controls on the front of the radio are not real to the extent that they were on the 1051 or R-390 but it still has a radio look and feel, all the SDR people I know are obsessed with the "skins" and what there GUI looks like but to me that just ant radio.

Post Script:
I just reserved my spaces at Dayton today and asked for 7404/7405 or 7432/33, I like TTL devices. Tried to get people on Millsurplus and MRCA to cooperate and maybe collocate spaces but no one wants to play so that's what I am planning.

And nowadays the R-1051 and R-2368 are replaced by a General Dynamics digital gadget, AN/USC-61 http://www.navy-radio.com/xmtrs/DMR-01.jpg

Bah humbug, I say!
