RF-2368 replaced many a 1051, it has a tuning dial. Think the big thing is that you can remote a RF-2368/RF-590 way better than anything you can do with an R-1051. Perhaps computer control did more then anything else to kill the idea of lots of dedicated receivers?

A lot of it depends on what kind of listening you happen to be into. If it’s “I want to watch for *this guy* at *that frequency*, it’s the ideal radio for the task. Set up one of your stack of 1051’s there and let it run for a few weeks / months. 

Speaking of stacks of 1051’s, most of the pictures of them I’ve seen in use, were indeed stacks of radios. I’m guessing they are representative of at least 90% of the way the radios were used. Most of the replacement radios for the 1051 had the same basic design limits. You punch in a frequency and let it sit. Band cruising was not a required feature.
