A resistance capacitance coupled oscillator is not a bad thing at all. The last couple weeks I have been working on AN/GRC-106 5 MHz reference oscillators and after much work, replacement of components and the like I am not getting much love from them. They use a tuned circuit 5MHz crystal in a modified Armstrong with a buffer in the oscillator assembly and somehow refuse to start oscillating. What’s real frustrating is that they can be sometimes kicked started and run fine, other times they work most of the time but after a while they stop and ones that are interment I have been successful in killing completely. Just got a brand new never opened one the other day from back in 1980 and that one still has times it needs to be kick started. Although it’s all wrong am going to build a new R/C coupled oscillator with there crystals into one of the existing oven cases and use that for the radio and give up on the flakey tuned circuit that they originally used.
