[R-1051] Lamps

Given the work it takes to retrofit a lamp into the Grimes base, when my time comes I will go straight to LED.
I won't bother with bases and sockets either.

If it's convenient to rewire the lamp sites in parallel, I recommend the Philips Lumiled "Luxeon 3535 HV" series of SMT LEDs. They're available at at least one major online vendor for less than $1 each. These are fabricated with multiple junctions in series totaling 24V. They are rated at 15mA, and will put out more light than you need, allowing use of small cheap dropping resistors. I'm in the middle of rehabilitating some HP photocell choppers, and these LEDs can be driven at neon current levels with power to spare.

The original Grimes lamps are hugely expensive and seem to be one of those
"What were they thinking?" items.

I made new ones by placing a new wire-lead lamp inside the original screw-in
housing of the old bulb after smashing the glass and digging it all out.
This was detailed on Nolan Lee's website but I am not sure whether anyone is
hosting that material anymore. I can't remember the # of the bulb I used
but I bought a quantity from a bulb specialist that has an on-line ordering
system. They were not too expensive and I ruined a couple trying to make
replacements.

The 387 will not work as a direct substitute. Today I would probably
investigate using LED's instead but some LED's will be way too bright, and
experimentation is in order. Remember that the original scheme has the
bulbs in series.

I never thought as a radio enthusiast that I would have to manufacture my
own lamp bulbs.
