Al and the group
I can't help you at all but I wanted to tell you a very short story
about a URC35. I was the commo on DE1084 McCandless and I had a radio
chief that worked phone patches back to the states with that rig from
emergency radio a couple nights a week. fortunately, it never had to be
used, but the compartment was a great place to turn it on, dial up BBC
and nobody could find me so I could get some work done in complete
privacy. Only the chief probably knew that when they could not find me,
that's probably that last step before they announced over the 1MC Mr.
Metz to the Bridge! The expression of one of my first class petty
officers when he knocked on the door one day was priceless. Told me
the chief had sent him there looking for me! Sort of like what are you
doing here? No license at that point either.
