This brings back kinda 'off topic' memories. Back in the very late 70's, I was a Customer Engineer for IBM. One of the products I serviced in my territory, was the IBM Series III Copier. One option was a single or dual collator. This was driven from the Copier, by, guess what? The same plastic chain.
This chain snaked it's way over, under and around a BUNCH of metal gears. These chains broke SO often, all of us Copier guys carried a bunch of them with us. Product Engineering tried all kind of 'tricks' to improve the pathetic life of this chain. The WORST was coating it with IBM Molykote. This was a high content Moly lube. Now when the chain broke, your hands got SO black, it was nearly impossible to get the Moly off. The particles are so small, they go into the pores of your skin!
My (and other Tech's) first question in training was "WHY a plastic chain?".
We were told it was needed to pass the acoustic tests. BS. I bet it was there for the $.

Anyway, later in my career, I learned some Tech got a $100K award for suggesting that IBM (Boulder, Co) replace the chain with the metal one.

I wore a small length of that metal chain for years as a 'bracelet' to remind me that I should have suggested it myself during training!!!!

PS I use a length of this same plastic chain to drive the table of my milling machine back and forth. Yes, it breaks often and the WORST part is trying to make the end-to-end connections!!!!

I have a pair of R1051H's. Both have had the chain drives changed from
the nylon types to steel chain. One of the H's could use some work and
while I love working on R390A's, not so much with R1051's.

Need to send it to an R1051 expert.
