My R-1051 plain is coming along great. I've gone through almost the entire machine.
Two component leads had never been soldered. One weakened the oscillator in the 100kc synth,
the other made the RF amp deaf on the 12mc band.
One SMB connector was intermittent, which killed the 1&10kc error output and the 100kc injection.
One transistor was shorted, which weakened the 500cps output and the 100kc injection.
Most adjustable coils were low on inductance - some by ten percent -, presumably because the core
material's permeability had drifted downward. In two cases I had to tack on additional capacitance before
it would cal. A spectrum analyzer plus tracking generator is a HUGE help for aligning these.
The most obvious result was that the radio was no longer hard of hearing on the 2mc and 3mc bands.
The radio benefitted from a complete alignment. I recommend it.
Acetone freed up the slugs (YMMV), but they're still delicate. A plastic hollow-ground tip is best.
Tap Plastics sells 1/4" Delrin rod.
I still have to redo the Frequency Standard's thermistor, because I forgot to solder the leads the first time.
After I've confirmed that the new NTC thermistor works, I'll post a writeup.
I've got some 500kc leaking into AM and CW mode. Probably the Mode Selector, which I haven't opened up yet.
Then there's the issue of the different AGC time constants.
And then I might be done!
