Hi Lee & all
there is a device that follows Jan's description currently available for this purpose. Years ago I bought one (this offer now says "improved") and have used it occasionally. It's not as good as the mil-pullers (assume you are talking about the stell mesh things) but it worked for me.

To find it go to Antique Electronic Supplies at http://www.tubesandmore.com/ and look for "Tube Extractor" item # S-T5092.

Wish you success and a Happy New Year to all!
