This was probably intended to be sent off list...or at least should have
been. I can attest to Daves character. He is a fine person and I am
certain not out to rip you off Orrin. The 1051 is a heavy radio and needs
to be packaged well to avoid damage that is difficult to repair. If you are
not in the business of packaging such packing one up properly is a pain in
the behind. I have used Dell computer boxes to ship them all over the USA
with none ever damaged. The secret is about 3 inches of styrene (house
insulating board..not styrofoam) on every side with spacers made of the same
to support the insulation material back to the front panel to take the load
off the flimsy rack handles and any pressure off the knobs. I also cut a
relief into the first couple of pieces around the rear panel connectors.
It's a pain but it works.

I have recently shipped another heavyweight radio to various places using a
box built by Hank Arney on the R-390 list. hankarn at pacbell.net
He puts together a form fitting box capable of handling the weight and the
shippers abuse. That's the other secret...the radio can't move inside it's
packaging.

Hank may have or be able to put together a box for the 1051..he has a bunch
of them (1051's...boxes too). I have one of his boxes that has 5 round
trips on it shipping R-390A's and it will probably go that many more.

I hope that helps solve this dilemma for you guys...

Merry CHRISTmas...

Cecil Acuff
