[R-1051] Complexity of the 1051

Hi John,
The R-1051 is about as complex as they come....for boatanchor
radio's. The biggest problems is that it is a completely modular radio and
you need a set of extender cables to be able to get a given module out of
the chassis but powered up to troubleshoot it. Even then the circuit boards
in some of the modules are sandwiched together in such a manner that it
becomes difficult to fix.
That's not to say it is impossible, just quite a challenge. I do
repairs/restorations on them as a small part time business....mainly because
it was suggested there was a need. There is a fair amount of interest in
the radios but their complexity puts a lot of folks off.
You can swap modules around and isolate a problems...if you have a set of
known good modules for the particular chassis you have....but even that is a
problem sometimes because the alignment of the radio is spread across
several modules and a misalignment in one module can cause poor performance
in others. That's why even if you get a good collection of modules from
several different sources the radio will often not perform up to specs...
Hope that helps....
