Hi Steve and Group,
I would be interested in the module repair books as well....after a
fair amount of hunting around I came up empty handed.
I am doing an LED mod on some of the radios that are going through the shop.
I have the pictures to put up on the web page, I just need the time to get
them up there. I have had some mixed results. There seems to be some
inconsistencies in the brightness and color output of the Super Bright White
LED's. Some are yellowish, some are Bluish. you never know what your
going to get when you order them. They are also quite expensive as LED's
go. $4 to $5 each. I have also found that some of the Lucite bars used in
the radios distribute the light unevenly with the LED's mounted in the same
places that work in other radios.
I guess all this said....It is still going through some development, but
still should be a viable solution to the expensive and hard to find OEM
lamps.
The mod involves drilling 4 1/8" holes in the Lucite bar at specific
locations. The LED's are built into a harness that is dressed in behind the
Lucite bar and the LED's glued into the holes. A ground is picked up nearby
at a solder post and the + lead is dressed into the harness back to the
power supply where it is attached to the post that supplies the existing
lamps. (the original lead is disconnected but left in the harness). The
two series resistors on the power supply board are removed and replaced with
a single resistor of the appropriate value and wattage.
It is all completely reversible. Replace the original resistors, swap the
electrical connection, pop in two original lamps and all is back to
original! The LED's can be pulled out including the added wiring and all
that is left behind are the 4 holes.
The lighting effect is subtle. It is visible in a lighted room but not
overly bright in a darkened room. The color looks like a fluorescent lamp
has been placed behind the dial.
I am going to explore maybe adding a 5th lamp and placing them directly
behind each window...I'll let you know if I work that out!
Hope that helps!
