Ed thanks for the information.
Yes the synth is comprise of several modules and I took each one out and put
it into another working unit and they all worked fine.
I have found that one of the sync signals were missing that was coming from
the power supply and I fixed that and also found the sub power supply had
some bad capacitors and they were replace but still the same sound going pop
pop pop at a slow pace.
I am still in the hunt.
You say you have a HRO 600 why you lucky dog .
I wish I had one I have never even seen one on ebay .
They must be very hard to find.
I love National receivers as you can see other wise I would never fool with
this R -1490
This to is a rare dog not many were made and some say this was one of the
last receiver made by National before they went out of business.

Matt,
That sounds like an interesting receiver. I've never seen on of those, but
here's a thought on your problem.
I had a National HRO-600 that made that "motorboating" sound. It turned
out to be a synthesizer problem. Like the HRO-500, both of the 600's
synths. sweep when unlocked. The idea is to sweep the VCO through the
desired frequency to produce lock -- it allows the VCO to lock instead of
getting stuck at a frequency extreme. The sweeping VCO produced the
motorboating sound.
I can't explain why swapping the modules didn't fix the problem in your
receiver unless the synth. is comprised of several modules and the loop is
broken somewhere in the mainframe wiring. Can you tell if the synth. is
locked? I'd start there.
Good luck and 73,
Ed N3CMI

Tony I will look at the grounds also.
All audio is contained in the audio module so a swap would have cured that
problem also.
I have not scoped the supply but there is a 125v line coming out of the
power supply and if you take your meter and measure the voltage you can see
the voltage
Moving up and down with the noise the receiver makes.
If you had a schematic of this receiver I could show you where this voltage
goes and it goes to another module and that has been swapped.
Oh yes the power supply is also a module and I swapped that also. .
This so interesting I have never had a receiver stump me like this before.
I am getting so familiar this receiver I soon will no it backwards and
forward.
On the working one the SSB works so nice that is one of the reasons I want
to fix it .
Now don't get me wrong I do have an R 1051B and I have 2 more coming with a
T-195 transmitter.
They are great receivers also but much heaver than the R 1490 .
I hope no one get upset about talking about the R 1490 but this is a
comparison to a R-1051 .
Like a R -390 is compared to and R-392
One big guy and one little guy both doing the same job but only little and
less weight.
If you know any one with any more experience send them my way I have never
really heard of any one with any real experience working on this receiver.

matt,
have you looked at the power supply rails with a scope to look for
weirdness there?? other than that pop-pop through the speaker, is normally
an audio amp problem, have seen this caused by a lost ground for audio
circuit, I am not up to speed on this unit enough to really point you in a
good direction, but I would be looking at grounds!!
