Check out:

for an in-depth look at the Small Wonder Labs SW40+. There are also
instructions for homebrewing this radio at

http://www.qsl.net/k7qo/

The amount of information on the web about the SW+ series is probably the
radio's biggest selling point. It's also very inexpensive. But this is a
pretty basic radio. The others menioned, with the exception of the
RockMite, are all more elaborate (and more expensive). The RockMite is a
cool little radio, but it's rockbound, which can make things a bit
frustrating, especially if it's your only radio.

The Elecraft radios have a very active and vocal following. These tend to
be a little higher-end than the Small Wonder Labs radios. While SWL has
focused on the simple, single-band QRP rigs, Elecraft has been more like a
QRP alternative to the Yaecomwood's. The price points are pretty
dramatically different ... Dave Benson tends to focus on rigs "around $100",
while the Wayne/Eric price tends to be $300-1000. But then, Dave's rigs are
all single banders ... Elecrafts are all multi-band, digital readout, etc.

You might want to look through the archives of the Elecraft reflector on
qth, and the QRP-L reflector on http://qrp.lehigh.edu/lists/qrp-l/
